In the wake of Jon Jones’ positive UFC 214 drug test, the UFC is currently in limbo regarding what to do with the disgraced former light heavyweight champion. The United States Anti-Doping Agency is currently still carrying out investigations and has yet to reveal Jones’ punishment, if any.

Just a couple of weeks ago, UFC Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky, made headlines when he suggested the possibility of Jones not being sanctioned at all and how he could get out of this mess virtually unscathed. For a second-offense however, Jones is definitely facing harsher penalties.

When UFC President Dana White was asked if he agreed with giving Jones harsher penalties, he concurred but left the decision to USADA.

“Yeah I don’t disagree with that but USADA handles that, we’re out of that business, we leave it to the professionals,” said White, in a recent interview on Sports Illustrated.

Novitzky Gives an Update on the Jon Jones Situation

For Novitzky, if Jones can prove that he unwillingly took the tainted supplement, then he could get himself out of this debacle with as little as light scolding from USADA. However, if proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, Jones faces up to four years suspension. This effectively ends his mixed martial arts career.

Novitzky told the media:

“So where we are at is that Jon’s team is working hard. We (the UFC) are assisting them wherever we can to try to determine how this substance got into his system. Sometimes that is not a quick process. It can take weeks, if not months of testing supplements and retracing your steps.

“Best case scenario is if he (Jones) can prove that this (substance) thing came from something that was not high risk.”

Recently, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping said he believes Jones should receive a lifetime ban. When asked whether or not he agreed, White deferred to USADA.

“Legally USADA would have to handle this thing and whatever USADA says he is going to have to follow that punishment because they work hand in hand with the athletic commission whether its Nevada or California or whatever it might be, which is essentially the government. So the government works with USADA and they figure out what the ban is going to be but if they came back that Jon Jones would get a three month suspension, legally I owe him a fight. I legally owe him a fight. I have a contract with the guy.”

In light of this, perhaps the UFC could include clauses in fighters’ contracts where an agreement is void if and when fighters test positive for doping. However, White dismissed the idea and said things were more complex than they seem.

“It is a lot more complicated than that, in a perfect world, that sounds awesome but this isn’t a perfect world.”

Looks like the story is incredibly muddled right now and there doesn’t seem to be any clarity regarding Jones’ situation. As soon as the details clear, we should get a better picture of what will happen to Jon Jones moving forward.
